			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class="announcement_post"><p>If you&#8217;re wondering how to begin yoga, you can get audio or video lessons on tapes, CD&#8217;s or DVD&#8217;s that give breathing instruction and teach relaxation techniques at your local library, health food stores, bookstores by mail order or online.<br />
 <br />
It&#8217;s probably OK to learn breath and relaxation from a tape or booklet, but don&#8217;t try the yoga exercises without a skilled teacher. He or she can make corrections, caution you when necessary, and help you to adapt poses, if you need to.  </p>
<p>Although most people with diabetes can exercise safely, exercise involves some risks. To shift the benefit-to-risk ratio in your favor, take these precautions:</p>
<ul>
<li>Have a medical exam before you begin your exercise program, including an exercise test with EKG monitoring<br />
Speak with your doctor about any unusual symptoms that you experience during or after exercise</li>
<li>If you have diabetes-related complications, check with your healthcare team about special precautions. Consider exercising in a medically supervised program, at least initially.</li>
<li>Learn how to prevent and treat low blood glucose levels (hypoglycemia). If you take oral agents or insulin, monitor your blood glucose levels before, during and after exercise.</li>
<li>If you have type I, and your blood glucose is above 250 milligrams per deciliter, check your urine for ketones. Don&#8217;t exercise if ketones are present, because exercise will increase your risk of ketoacidosis and coma.</li>
</ul>
<p>Always warm up and cool down.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t exercise outdoors when the weather is too hot and humid, or too cold.</p>
<p>It will be worth it to you to spend a little time finding an instructor who is right for you. Your diabetes nurse educator or other health care professional may be able to recommend a yoga instructor. Get referrals for a yoga instructor as you would for any professional you might wish to consult.</p>
<p>Yoga instructors don&#8217;t have to be certified, but many are, through many different programs. Ask prospective teachers if they are certified. A certified teacher isn&#8217;t necessarily better than someone who isn&#8217;t certified, but it&#8217;s something to consider.</p>
<p>Yoga is fun, healthy, and calming. It&#8217;s a wise way handed down over several thousands of years.  When you begin yoga, understand that there is little danger in yoga, and even a little progress brings with it freedom and peace of mind.</p>

<p>Yoga and Meditation go hand in hand and<span id="more-198"></span> can really help to advance your personal growth.</p>

<p>Yoga really is just another form of meditation. When you practice yoga poses, you are allowing your attention to turn inward, noticing the subtle energy that flows through your body. While some practitioners use yoga solely for strength training and increased physical flexibility, the physical benefits of yoga only represent one side of this highly beneficial practice. As a medium to align yourself with your pure divine nature, yoga and meditation will help you to heighten your sense of self-awareness and build a great foundation for your personal growth.</p>
<p>If you take a close look at the basic principals of yoga and meditation you will see that they really aren&#8217;t that different. Both practices offer a wide array of mental, physical, and spiritual benefits. Without trusting in yourself, it will be difficult to achieve optimal physical and spiritual benefits.</p>
<p>Second, both practices require a sense of discipline. We are all deeply rooted in the material world, filled with obligations and the stresses of daily life, and it is these obligations that will distract you from your goals of practicing yoga and meditation. It takes discipline and a deep sense of belief when it comes to practicing each of these techniques. To completely enjoy all the profound benefits of your yoga and meditation sessions try to avoid missing too many sessions.</p>
<p>Ultimately a great deal of patience is required. Even though it may take some time to master these practices you can still benefit while you are learning. When you first begin yoga and meditation it may feel like a waste of time but it is important to be patient to gain the full benefits. It may take some time but the benefits will come.</p>
<p>Because meditation and yoga are very similar in nature, you can get wonderful benefits from each with only a small amount of effort. You will even be able to use these practices together, in time. The meditative aspect of yoga makes it easy to realize substantial physical and mental benefits that will help you to improve nearly every aspect of your life.</p>
<p>At the minimum yoga is a great way to get your body in shape and if you learn the benefits of meditation you will get the best of both worlds and take your spiritual growth to a whole new level.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Deciding that you want to start doing yoga is the first step. It is often a stopping block here. Don&#8217;t be intimidated! Below outlines some of the steps you will need to take to kickstart and start enjoying the pleasures and benefits of yoga.</p>
<p>1. Pick a Yoga Type</p>
<p>A little reading and research will be needed on your part. There are many different types of yoga classes available, and if you pick one that<span id="more-197"></span> does not suit your personality and state of physical fitness, you may be turned off.</p>
<p>Take a few minutes to review the various yoga styles. Most beginners, a Hatha or Vinyasa class will be most suitable. These are basic styles and you can always try something challenging and fancy later.</p>
<p>2. Find a Class</p>
<p>These resources will help you find a yoga class in your precinct. You can also read through local alternative newspapers or wellness magazines for listings or do a search online for &#8220;yoga&#8221; and &#8220;your town.&#8221;</p>
<p>Select a studio that is close to your home, work or vicinity.  This is highly encouraged as you will need to take a shorter time getting to class and is easier. It is highly recommended to start with a basic level class. Many gyms also have yoga classes with excellent teachers. This is normally a good place to start if you already belong to a gym.</p>
<p>3.   Find a retreat</p>
<p>Yoga retreat is another alternative place which provides relaxation for you in a community where you can practice focused learning and also practice it in a social setting. All that you really need is to have many people with a passion for yoga and thus a yoga retreat may last for short or long durations depending on how much commitment people have to its practice.</p>
<p>There are plenty of chances to mix around with other similarly inclined people and thus meet and interact with other people of diverse backgrounds. You never know when you can develop a lifelong friendship or relationship by going to a yoga retreat.</p>
<p>The yoga retreat is led by a guru or experienced yoga instructor who will offer special guidance to those who are just starting out in yoga, and who need to be properly introduced to its nuances. Additionally, a yoga retreat will normally provide food and accommodation in which the whole experience is very comprehensive. It pays special and close attention to each attendee and their diet as that will be one that encourages a better and healthier lifestyle, and the staff will definitely dedicate them to providing proper service in an idyllic locale.</p>
<p>The main objective of a yoga retreat is to promote relaxation as well as get the mind and body in perfect balance; so, be prepared to do leave out the radio and television and even phones in your room. It will afford you a welcome opportunity to relax and get away from the crazy city life and embrace instead the serenity of peaceful locations.</p>
<p>4. What to Bring</p>
<p>You will not need to bring much except yourself and some comfortable, breathable clothing on your first day. Know the basic yoga equipment you will encounter. Most studios have basic yoga equipments and these can be usually rented.</p>
<p>5. What to Expect</p>
<p>In a yoga class, the students put their mats facing the front of the room (often identifiable by a small altar or by the teacher&#8217;s mat) in a loose grid. It is recommended not to line up your mat exactly with the one next to it as you and your neighbor will need some space in certain poses. The students often sit in a cross-legged position waiting for class to begin or do some gentle stretching.</p>
<p>The teacher may begin the class by leading the class in chanting om three times. Depending on the teacher, there may be a breathing exercise or short meditation when the class commences.</p>
<p>It is followed by warm-up poses, then more vigorous poses, then stretches and final relaxation. At any time, return to Child&#8217;s Pose if you need some rest.</p>
<p>Sometimes, the instructor will go around to each student during final relaxation and give them a little massage. Most teachers conclude class with another round of oms.</p>
<p>Give yourself a pat on your back as you just took your first yoga class! Note that you may experience soreness after your first yoga class.</p>
<p>6. Don&#8217;t Have Any Access to Yoga Classes?</p>
<p>While there are many great yoga books and videos available, there is no replacement from learning directly from a good teacher in a yoga class. That is if you still unable to find a yoga class, I recommend starting with any beginner&#8217;s video, as this will provide you with more visuals to follow than a book.</p>
<p>7. Dos and Don&#8217;ts</p>
<p>The Don&#8217;ts</p>
<p>DON&#8217;T eat a heavy meal right before class. Try to eat light a few hours before class commences.</p>
<p>DON&#8217;T drink water during class, but have it before and after.</p>
<p>DON&#8217;T wear shoes or socks during class.</p>
<p>The Dos</p>
<p>DO let the teacher know that it&#8217;s your first class (you might not be the only one).</p>
<p>DO not hesitate to seek for instructor&#8217;s help if you need it.</p>
<p>DO look around and follow what other students are doing, particularly if the teacher does not demonstrate every pose. However, take note that you may be looking at more advanced students so do not compare yourself to them.</p>
<p>DO familiarize yourself with some beginners&#8217; yoga poses before you begin your first class.</p>
<p>DO read through Yoga Etiquette so you feel very comfortable entering an unfamiliar situation.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><b>How to begin yoga and meditation for the family?</b>
<p>We have noticed our lives becoming a bit too hectic and stressful lately and with all the external things going on it seems to be impacting our home&#8230;we feel like home is becoming cluttered, both in terms of physically being cluttered as we feel like we are falling behind due to family and work commitments&#8230;but also our mind/bodies feeling cluttered<span id="more-196"></span> because of stress and lack of time or proper planning of our diet.</p>
<p>We would like to do something as a family (have two little ones) to help reduce our stress levels and learn to relax.  We have talked about starting to do yoga and/or meditation as a family but aren&#039;t sure what the best way to get started is?  Are there any specific recommended books/CD&#039;s/DVD&#039;s we should start with?  Should we go to a yoga cener?  I looking into some yoga/meditation centers around here (Dallas,TX) but some were a bit too much into the spiritual aspect, we don&#039;t watnt to get that into it, just learn how to relax a bit more.</p>

<p><b>Iyengar yoga:</b> Iyengar yoga emphasizes precise alignment of the body while holding postures.</p>
<p><b>Kripalu Yoga:</b> Kripalu Yoga integrates yoga postures and breathing with meditation, making it as much an inward experience as it is an outward exercise. Classes range from gentle to vigorous in level of exertion.</p>
<p><b>Kundalini Yoga:</b> Kundalini Yoga is an intense combination of purifying, energetic movements with breathing and chanting to awaken energy centers called chakras and clear away blockages in the energy body.</p>
<p><b>Restorative Yoga:</b> Restorative yoga is a very gentle practice. Participants use props to support them in the poses, getting the energetic and opening benefits of the postures without exerting much force. </p>
<p><b>Prenatal and Momma-Baby yoga:</b> Yoga can enhance the pregnancy experience, help a healthy birth and keep mom and baby in shape afterwards.</p>
<p><b>Vinyasa yoga:</b> Vinyasa yoga (also called flow and power yoga) is the movement from one posture to the next, each movement connected by the inhalation or exhalation of the breath. Usually the flow is based on the sun salutation and the pace of movement between poses is fairly fast, but that is not always the case.</p>
<p><b>Yin Yoga:</b> Yin Yoga targets the connective tissue &#8211; tendons, ligaments, and cartilage &#8211; for increased flexibility. Postures tend to be held for longer periods as a restorative technique. Yin yoga emphasizes grounding, as opposed to more energetic &#8216;yang&#8217; styles of yoga, like Ashtanga, for instance.</p>

<p>My suggestion: always start first practices with instructors.  It is important to learn basic breathing, movement theory, and correct posture &#039;how-to&#039; in early contact of yoga.  Avoid starting yoga from books/video because by just imtating the outlook can create unwanted injury.</p>
<p>There are many styles in yoga, all are beneficial<span id="more-193"></span> in specific aspects.  The gentle and widely practices Hatha yoga is generally suitable for beginnings.  You may build your own interests and focus later on the path of yoga.</p>

<p>Yoga, which means discipline, was developed in the year 300 by an Indian master named Patanjali. Its purpose is to stretch the muscles, strengthen the body and increase concentration. It can also help you relax, if you have trouble doing that.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s no wonder this ancient discipline has become popular among modern entertainers and athletes. Depending on who practices it, yoga can be simply a set of exercises or a total way of life. When you <span style="text-decoration: underline;">begin Yoga</span>, you walk on a path that many have traveled over the centuries with great accomplishment.</p>
<p>Some who practice yoga, called yogis, try to use the discipline to reach a high level of consciousness. They respect certain abstentions (things not to do), such as not lying, stealing, being greedy or harming other people.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">They also practice certain observances (things to do), such as being clean, content, self-controlled, studious and devoted.</p>
<p>Physical control is also important in yoga. Yogis train themselves to take full, deep breaths. They consider breathing a life force, counting a lifespan not in years but in the number of breaths taken.</p>
<p>Unlike exercises that work only on strength, yoga also helps the body become flexible. As a result, some yoga exercises (called asanas) look a little strange, and you may think you need to be a human pretzel to do them. Not so. You just have to relax.</p>
<p>In yoga, you ease into stretches, never forcing yourself. The saying no pain&#8211;no gain simply does not apply. You do only the best you can at the moment, and at some later moment you will do more.</p>
<p>All yoga poses demand balance and since you can&#8217;t balance if you&#8217;re thinking about last night&#8217;s TV show, yoga also demands concentration. Learn to concentrate in yoga, and you will be better able to concentrate in baseball, tennis or even school.</p>
<p>Yoga exercises copy nature. Many yoga poses can be traced to the shapes of creatures, such as the cobra, cat, dog, tortoise, crab and eagle.</p>
<p>In the cobra pose, for example, you lie on your stomach with your forehead to the floor. As you inhale, you slowly roll your head back, supporting yourself with your hands. You hold that pose, then come down slowly, trying to move as a snake would move.</p>
<p>All yoga exercises promote strength and calmness. Each move&#8217;s effects on a muscle, a gland or a nerve center are carefully thought out.</p>
<p>You can choose certain exercises to rid yourself of particular pains, such as back pain from back-packing or leg pain from jogging. Yoga can help condition you for skiing or help you control feelings of depression or fear. Once you <strong>begin Yoga</strong>, you&#8217;ll quickly realize the benefits.</p>
<p>Any good book on yoga will describe various asanas and tell how each works. You may even have done yoga exercises already. Ever done a handstand, or the wheel. Many exercise programs borrow from yoga.</span></p>
