Many have started practicing yoga in order to improve their physical fitness, reduce stress, and sustain good health. Yoga doesn’t require any special equipment, clothes, shoes, or other accessories, which could be part of why it’s so popular. Really, all you need to practice yoga are comfortable clothes you can stretch in and a eco yoga mat to pose on. And just like the attire that you choose to wear to class, your yoga mat can come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors to meet your individual preferences and needs.
Choosing a Yoga Mat
You need to have a good understanding of what natural rubber yoga mat are out there, and how they are meant to be used, before you choose one. Sticky mats are a sensible choice, because they can be used with almost any type of yoga. True to their name, sticky mats are generally thin and become slightly sticky when moist. The stickiness gives you a sense of confidence and security when you are attempting a difficult yoga pose. You know it won’t slip out from under you. Sticky mats come in a variety of sizes and colors, so you’ll have no problem finding the one that’s right for you.
If you like the idea of the sticky mat, but would like a little extra padding, go for the extra thick sticky mat. These yoga mats are popular because they combine the comfort of a thicker mat with the stability of the sticky mat surface. They are going to be heavier and bulkier to tote around however, so they may not be the yoga mat of choice if you are going to need to transport it back and forth to class. Travel mats, which are lighter and easier to carry, may work better for taking back and forth to class. Just like their name implies, these mats easily fit into a suitcase and are perfect for taking on vacation.
Some yoga disciplines can cause you to sweat quite a bit. If this is the case, you may want to choose a cotton mat to help absorb some of that moisture. Rather than becoming slippery and dangerous, the cotton mat’s grip actually improves as it becomes damp so it’s a safe choice for tougher yoga routines. Again, finding the yoga mat that works best for you, and fits your personality, will be easy because they come in a variety of colors and sizes. And when it comes time to shop for a mat, take the time to try a few out to see which one will feel the best. If you choose a yoga mat that is practical and functional, it should last you a very long time.
