Yoga can help you achieve peacefulness and a harmonious balance between your mind and body. It has a lot of health benefits such as improving your posture, relieving stress and stretching your tight muscles. However, if you are only a beginner in this art and science of yoga, you might get that natural feeling of uneasiness when you see the different yoga positions. Add to that the fact that each position has a strange and sometimes intimidating name to it.

However, there is no real need to worry about it because there are yoga positions that are perfect for all novices. Although these are really quite easy to do, just like with anything else, some beginners may find a few of these positions a little hard for them to follow. But through repetitions and constant training, all of these will go away allowing for you to achieve relaxation and greater balance like you have never felt before.

1. Child’s Pose

Also called the Child’s Pose, it will stretch your hips, thighs and ankles. It can also help with mild back pain problems. To achieve this, you must drop on the floor spreading your knees as wide as you can while keeping your big toes touching each other. Rest your belly on top of your thighs and then let your forehead touch the floor. Then your arms should be stretched upward above your head.

2. The Tadasana

Also known as the Mountain Pose, it will help improve your posture as well as strengthen your back. You start by standing straight with your head and neck also in a straight upward position. Next let your big toes touch one another. Should you feel some uneasiness because of your knees pressed on each other, ease up on your knees a little bit until you feel more comfortable. Finally draw in your belly until you feel a little resistance from your tummy muscles.

3. Cat Stretch

This yoga position will help improve your abdominal strength while stretching the spine. To achieve this, you must drop on all fours just like a cat, hence the name. Now imagine that there is a line drawn on your back. It should be straight, starting from your head all the way down to your spine. Keep this imaginary line straight. Hold this position for a few seconds or a couple of minutes.

4. The Uttanasana

Also called the Uttanasana, this is a pretty straight forward position. This will stretch your hamstrings, providing for more flexibility. To do this pose, stand straight on your mat then bend down with your hands reaching the sides of your feet. Make sure to flatten your palms on mat. Put all your weight on the balls of your feet. When you do this you will quickly feel your hamstrings being stretched. Hold your position for as long as you can.

5. The Urdhva Hastasana

It is also called the Raised Hands Pose, it helps straighten your back which improves your posture while at the same time strengthening your thigh muscles. To achieve this pose you must stand straight on the mat. Next, stretch out your arms upward into the air with both palms touching together. Always be mindful to keep your back straight all the time.

Now you can get a bag to carry your mat in.  Great music is a good thing to obtain.  Depending on what kind of music you get will help you loosen up and make your muscles feel better.  Your overall body well-being responds well to this.  Music comes in all different kinds; some have the sounds of nature and the outdoors.  The music is easy going and very encouraging.

Don’t forget to drink a lot of water while you are exercising.  When you exercise toxins can be released into the body and if you drink lots of water this can flush them out.  Drink as much water as you can, typically the more the better.

You want to make stretching a part of your daily routine, like brushing your teeth and eating.  You want to make stretching as important as these other daily routines because if you don’t you’ll be tempted to leave them out.  This is just a few things I know about yoga positions.
